Finding the Right Fit (Dear Wednesday)

May Introduction

May is quite an awareness and appreciation heavy month. With all of the appreciation and remembrance going on at this time I felt as if We “Women” needed our own awareness. Not just to remember our history, but to embrace our present and future. I have noticed more and more that Women are losing their connectedness. This is not about being an introvert or extrovert rather it is about coming together to have fun, learn from each other and to share ideas with one another. Somewhere along the way, certain aspects of Womanhood morphed in to a backstabbing, catty game where everyone’s intentions had to questioned. Why is that? Here at the Challenge YoSelf platform we do not do divisiveness. We believe that Woman especially, are natural-born community creators. Take a look at some of the milestones reached when Women joined together: voting rights, the NASA team of African American Female mathematicians who helped launch the first Man in to outer space, and the Women’s suffrage movement to name a few.

To sum it all up, Beyoncé said it best:

“Boy you know you love it How we're smart enough To make these millions Strong enough to bare the children

Then get back to business

Who run the world, Girls”

Run the World (Girls) | Beyoncé | 2011

This month, go on a journey with me as we celebrate Women, Women Leaders and Womanhood.

Dear Wednesday: Finding the Right Fit

Let me ask you something… when was the last time you bought a bra? Do you remember the experience? Hopefully you all have better luck than me finding perfect fitting bras. I have an odd size as compared to my smaller Ladies, but apparently a popular size for my plus size Ladies. Thus, bra shopping can be an all-day stressful event. On the other hand, there are those rare times when I will find a bra that fits exactly how I need it to. It lifts and supports the girls like none other. Those are the bras I cherish. I take extra good care of them so it can take good care of me. While I am enjoying this conversation about bras this letter is not about underwear but sister-ware. Good bras are like good girl friends. They lift and support you when you are down and out. They are strong when you are weak. When you connect and develop a friendship like this, you become hooked like those really good support bras!

How is your support looking and feeling?

These friendships are not cheap. They take sacrifice and may cost you some of the comfort zone of purchasing bras from the $1 bin, but the cost is beyond worth the cost. The other thing about bras is not all of them fit. There are many styles, colors and designs. There are certain bras that are made for a specific shape. Like these undergarments, not everyone will turn in to your good girlfriend. Some connections are meant for a moment in time; some are for connection and networking, some are lifelong and some are not meant for you at all. Please hear me, all of that is okay! We are all created uniquely different. Why do you think there are so many sizes and fits of bras? While we may be different, we are still meant to be connected. There may be some of you out there right now who have never found that perfect fit.

I'm bold, brave, and boundless

I want to encourage you today that your tribe is out there. As you venture out of your comfort zone and habits, remember to try on a few sizes. Embrace the different styles, shapes and colors. Last but not least, release your perceptions and judgments. You never know where or how you will meet those good girl friends. Dear Wednesday Family, I hope you leave this letter inspired and encouraged to connect with other Ladies. If you are looking for a space to meet other Women please join us as we launch our Challenge YoSelf Cooperative next month on June 1st - sign up here. It will be a place for people to connect, share ideas and grow personally. Look out for more information regarding the cooperative in the coming weeks.

Now, let’s find that good bra!
